Painting Atmosphere:  Light, Colour & Abstraction

Painting Atmosphere:  Light, Colour & Abstraction

with Andrew Kinmont

13th June 2026, Pulford, Cheshire

Experience the sheer joy of bold, expressive brushwork and colour—where your painting loosens, lifts, and comes alive with energy, movement and feeling.

Many of my students arrive feeling stuck trying to paint what they see—overthinking, tightening up, and losing that sense of atmosphere. This one-day workshop is about breaking through that. You’ll learn a simple, step-by-step approach to creating atmospheric, semi-abstract landscapes driven by light, colour and gesture—where emotion and expression lead the painting, not the restrictions of realism.

It’s structured and easy to follow, but gives you the freedom to loosen up, simplify, and paint with confidence. Expect a relaxed, supportive day—and that unmistakable lift when your work starts to breathe, move, and come alive.

What You’ll Learn

• How to loosen your approach and paint with more freedom and confidence
• How to use expressive, gestural brushwork to create movement and energy
• How to simplify scenes into strong, atmospheric statements
• How to use light and tone to create mood and depth
• How to use colour more intuitively and avoid overworking your painting
• A clear, step-by-step process to take a painting from start to finish
